Chelsea could well find themselves in dire need of a new winger soon too, as Willian is being pursued by Barcelona, according to the Evening Standard.
The Brazilian’s departure would leave a gaping hole in new Blues boss Maurizio Sarri’s squad.
With Willian out of the picture, that would leave only Eden Hazard and Pedro as out and out wide players. Whilst that means Chelsea would be retaining a great deal of quality in that area of the pitch, they’d be sorely lacking depth.
The funds raised from any Willian sale, though, would be significant enough to finance the acquisition of a replacement. It could be that the replacement being lined up to step into Willian’s boots at Stamford Bridge is Leon Bailey.
Leon Bailey enjoyed a stunning breakout campaign in the Bundesliga last time out. 9 goals and 6 assists across 30 league appearances represented a brilliant return from the 20-year-old. His skill, pace and fearlessness in the face of opposition defenders would make him the ideal man to reprise Willian’s role in this Chelsea side.
Bailey’s versatility, which allows him to be comfortable when operating on either wing, would also make him a massive asset to Sarri. As a rotation option with a bright future, and with the ability to immediately provide competition for the likes of Pedro, the youngster would be an excellent target for Chelsea to pursue.
Transfermarkt value the Bayer Leverkusen man at £40.5 million. With the amount of money likely to be raised by Willian’s sale, Bailey would be within the Blues’ financial reach.
