There is a sense of excitement in the Football Transfer Tavern today as 2013 draws to a close.
In a year that has been a marked improved for Liverpool, fans in the bar have received positive news this morning as Spanish daily Marca suggest that the Reds are closing to bringing Barcelona’s Cristian Tello to Anfield.
Liverpool are sill recovering after two consecutive defeats in the Premier League that has seen them fall from first place to fifth at the turn of the year. This could see manager Brendan Rodgers looking to strengthen his side in what could prove to be a season-defining period for the Merseyside club.
The 22-year-old Barca ace has been interesting the Anfield side for the last few months, but recently signed a new deal at the Nou Camp supposedly ending any talk of a permanent move.
However Tello has struggled to gain much playing time under new boss Gerardo Martino, with just three starts this season, and that could him looking for a short-term move away.
He said: “I’m young, I want to play and enjoy. If it is not possible at the club, I will consider the outcome at the end of the season.”
Rodgers has reportedly made an enquiry to fetch him to Anfield until the end of the season, with interestingly a possible view of making it permanent in the summer.
The Spanish international, who has 10 goals in 47 appearances for the La Liga champions, would offer a more direct threat than youngster Raheem Sterling and on-loan winger Victor Moses as Rodgers seeks Champions League football again.
