West Ham United could miss out on one of their main January transfer targets once the transfer window reopens in the summer to one of world football’s biggest clubs.
According to a report by Don Balon, Barcelona are interested in Celta de Vigo’s Maxi Gomez, as they look to find someone that can replace Luis Suarez.
The 22-year-old has been excelling in La Liga this season, having nine goals in his 21 appearances for the struggling outfit.
West Ham were understood to have been very keen on the Uruguay international, however, they hit a few complications in regards to striking a deal.
Bleacher Report had claimed The Hammers were happy to keep him in Spain for the remainder of the season and pay the 43million fee Celta wanted.
However, once they learnt what Gomez’s wage demands would be, they decided to put a potential deal on the ‘back-burner’.
West Ham could be about to lose out on one of the hottest strikers in Europe as Barcelona appear to have taken an interest in him.
The pulling power the Spanish club have does not need to be explained and the chance to replace Suarez could appeal to Gomez even more following their backgrounds.
Should Manuel Pellegrini look to return for him in the summer, which could be likely as the club did not manage to add a striker in January, he could have a really tough battle on his hands to convince the Uruguayan to join him at the London Stadium next season.
