Tottenham Hotspur are yet to make their first venture into the transfer market this summer, but a recent report suggests that one of their long-term targets is available for transfer.
The 24-year-old Portuguese midfielder was highly-regarded in La Liga following an impressive debut campaign with Valencia, but since he departed for Barcelona he has desperately struggled to reach the pinnacle of his game.
Problems relating to his mental health and the pressure associated with playing for a club with astronomical expectations have had a negative impact on his development, and it seems the Catalan giants are ready to part ways with him as a consequence.
The playmaking central midfielder fits the Barcelona model on paper: he is typically a silky ball player with the composure to collect the ball in tight areas before distributing to great effect, but those qualities have failed to shine through at Barcelona like they did at Valencia.
But under a manager of Pochettino’s expertise and within a harmonious Tottenham squad, Gomes would have the perfect opportunity to resurrect his career and banish the demons of his Nou Camp nightmare.
And considering there is a strong chance Mousa Dembele will depart the club this summer, the arrival of a new ball-playing midfielder is exactly what Tottenham need to focus on before the window slams shut.
The recent report from Spain strongly suggests that Gomes will indeed be available, so the only obstacle preventing Spurs from securing his signature is their own decision making process.
His struggle to cope with pressure is a notable cause for concern, but the level of expectation at Tottenham is nothing close to the level which the Barcelona supporters and hierarchy have come to expect from the players, so Pochettino should take advantage of Gomes’ availability and bring him to North London in the coming weeks.
