Even though we here at the Football Transfer Tavern just want to be talking about the Champions League action last night, the Daily Mail have made a sensational claim that has drawn our eye away and got us talking about David Luiz.
The publication claim that the Brazilian is a number one transfer target for none other that Tito Vilanova’s Barcelona this summer. Of course David Luiz has come in for quite a bit of criticism during his time at Chelsea with some even doubting if the player is a central defender at all. Rafael Benitez has even deployed the player in a defensive midfield role with some success but doubts over the Brazilian remain.
No one would question the commitment of the defender, not his range of passing and ability to go forward if needed, and this has made him a candidate for a transfer to the Camp Nou.
Barcelona are renowned for their attacking style of play and they feel that Luiz would be key to their free flowing style – after all in La Liga it is very rare for the Catalan side’s defence to be under too much pressure, given the embarassment of talent going forward!
With skipper Carles Puyol getting no younger not to mention the fact that Gerard Pique is increasingly injury prone, the club are looking for back up and feel that Luiz is that man. Whether Chelsea would be willing to allow him to leave however is another question entirely.
