There is some breaking transfer news in the Football Transfer Tavern this evening.
The Express report that Barcelona are set to challenge Chelsea and Manchester City for highly rated Villarreal centre back Mateo Musacchio.
The 23-year-old has been in great form for the La Liga surprise package this season, playing every minute of their 16 La Liga matches.
This form has impressed watching suitors with Jose Mourinho reportedly looking at the Argentine defender as a possible answer to his current defensive problems.
Mourinho’s side have struggled to keep clean sheets of late and this is a concerning aspect for the former Real Madrid boss as he tries to secure the Premier League title with his former Inter Milan defender Ranocchia a potential target.
While Manuel Pellegrini wants to further improve his City side after a solid start in charge with a centre-back on the agenda to provide cover for the injury prone captain Vincent Kompany.
But is now looks like they face a fight for the Villarreal star as Barcelona search for a new central defender with club legend Carles Puyol reaching the end of his career.
Chelsea and City seem likely to make a move in January, but Musacchio might want to hold out until the end of the season to see if the Yellow Submarine can make an unlikely charge for the Champions League.
It is a transfer we’ll be certainly keeping an eye on here in the Football Transfer Tavern.
