There are some interesting reports in the Football Transfer Tavern as Luke Edwards from The Telegraph reports that Barcelona are set to make Lionel Messi the world’s highest paid player as they look to secure his future at the Camp Nou.
The 26-year-old currently has a deal under 2018 but interest from big-spending foreign club could force the Catalan club back to the negotiating table ahead of this summer’s World Cup.
Messi, the club’s leading scorer in history, was again the hero during Sunday’s El Clasico as his hat-trick helped to put Gerardo Martino’s side back into the La Liga title race.
Now Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu has now admitted that the club are already working on a deal that would see Messi paid in excess of £336,000-a-week, while retaining 100 per cent of his lucrative image rights.
“We all want Messi to be the best-paid player in the world and that is what we are working on,” Bartomeu said.
“Right now we are concentrating on the competitions we are in but it will happen soon.
“Nobody here wants to sell Messi,” the president added. “You cannot sell Leo. He arrived here when he was 13 and he is one of ours.”
Any contract extension will see his current buy-out clause increase from £206 million as Barca desperately try to keep hold of the world’s greatest player.
Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are both thought to have an interest in Messi but this mega-bucks deal could spell the end of any thought of him ever leaving Barcelona.
