This is after The Mirror revealed that he is ready to end the uncertainty over his future by signing a new deal at Tottenham.
It had been thought that the 27-year-old would leave White Hart Lane after the North London side failed to qualify for the Champions League.
It had even been rumoured that Barcelona were interested in bringing him to Spain but now the Belgium international has confirmed he intends to stay.
“It goes without saying that I would like to stay at Tottenham,” said Vertonghen.
“I still had a four-year contract but I see that they have offered me a new five-year contract as a great sign of confidence.”
The former Ajax defender is back training with the Spurs first team following his World Cup campaign in Brazil.
But the defender will need to undergo test on an ankle problem picked up during the finals.
