The Aston Villa fans have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern since news broke regarding Tony Xia’s dire financial situation.
Things have gone from bad to worse at Villa Park since the club failed to clinch promotion via the playoffs last season, with doubts looming over both the club’s ownership and Steve Bruce’s future. With the club in turmoil it seems wise for Bruce to scout the transfer market for talented players who should be available for a small fee or even on a free transfer this summer, and one player who should certainly be on his radar is Keisuke Honda.
The 31-year-old wide player who previously spent 3 and a half seasons with AC Milan is set to travel to Russia this summer with the Japanese international side, so Bruce should be keeping an eye on the quality of his performances during the World Cup. Honda has already confirmed that he will depart his current club CF Pachuca this summer in search of a new challenge and he has been tipped with a return to Asia.
However, with a record of 10 goals and 7 assists from 32 appearances last season, it appears that Honda still has plenty of quality to offer, and a move to England might just appeal to him before he winds down his career in Asia or the US. With that to consider, Bruce would be foolish not to offer him a contract with the club this summer to bolster his options in wide positions, especially now that Jack Grealish’s future hangs in the balance.
It’s always risky to sign players based on their performance during an international competition, but Honda has proven his quality in the past with AC Milan and CSKA Moscow, so Bruce should trust him to replicate his best form in the Championship if he impresses during the World Cup.
Tough times appear to be looming for Villa but it’s important they continue to improve throughout their financial crisis, and signing Honda on a free transfer at the end of the month would represent a perfect place to start in their bid to mount another promotion challenge next season.
