Alex Song vs. Rafael van der Vaart
Alex Song was most definitely Arsenal’s best player. He played his role extremely well. When Rafael van der Vaart came deep to get the ball Song was always there to keep him at bay. He made important tackles; he intercepted passes and started counter attacks and he allowed the other midfielders to attack as he sat there in the middle breaking things up.
Also the presence of Denilson on the pitch gave him licence to push forward to join the attacks and he clearly looked comfortable in doing so.
Even though Rafael van der Vaart scored the penalty and assisted Gareth Bale’s goal, he didn’t seem to be his usual self. He kept trying the first time killer pass or the fancy flick and they never really came off.
Of course we know how good he is and he kept up his fantastic scoring record but he was seen chasing shadows a little too often as he struggled to stamp his authority on the game.
My winner here is Alex Song.
