The first of my three player battles is between Luka Modric and Darren Fletcher.
These are two of the best central midfielders in the premier league who both have different styles of play. The Croatian likes to get on the ball more and dictate the play whilst Fletcher is more of a ball winner and then he feeds the more creative players like Michael Carrick to unlock defences.
This game was bossed by one player throughout and that was Modric. He dropped deep to pick up the ball from his defenders and sprayed the ball about the pitch. He found space in little pockets, kept the ball well and produced moments which had the crowd on their feet.
I think Fletcher had a good game, both he and Carrick in the middle kept things tight but they didn’t get hold of the ball as much as they would have liked. Modric looked best when he linked up with wingers, Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale, as he played them in with some great through balls and he even started the move of the match which saw Alan Hutton cross for Peter Crouch to touch it just wide of the near post.
My verdict: Luka Modric
