Newcastle lost to Tottenham’s title rivals Manchester City at the weekend and Spurs were trying to repeat the Geordies misery suffered on boxing day by beating them at White Hart Lane.
The game ended 2-0 a fair result as Newcastle never looked like they wanted to score throughout the game. Here is the first of my three major battles which saw Spurs take all three much needed points.
Michael Dawson vs. Andy Carroll
This was highlighted as a key battle before the game but the Spurs man looked in control at all times. The aerial battles were very physical and Carroll couldn’t bring the likes of Joey Barton and co into play because of Dawson’s presence.
Dawson was always close to his man when he received the ball to feet as he was unable to create or get any decent shot off. His partnership with Younes Kaboul looked strong and when Sebastian Bassong came on, they worked well enough to achieve an excellent clean sheet.
Tottenham have struggled for clean sheets of late, their last was on the opening day in the 0-0 draw with Manchester City. Having Dawson back in the fray definitely will help them push on now.
My Verdict: Michael Dawson
