Everton host Newcastle at Goodison Park today hoping to bounce back from their difficult Merseyside Derby loss.
Equally, Newcastle seek a win after losing to West Ham at home. Central to both sides’ ambitions of winning will be goalkeepers Martin Dúbravka and Jordan Pickford.
With that in mind, let’s compare these two transfers:
Newcastle signed Dúbravka permanently this summer after a decent half-season loan. He joined from Sparta Prague and has quickly become the first choice goalkeeper at St James’ Park.
He hasn’t exactly established himself as one of the best ‘keepers in the Premier League, but that is partly due to the fact that he has been in a team that has been severely struggling.
The greatest indication of how well the ‘keeper is playing is that he has been linked with a move to Italian giants Juventus this January. The club will not be afraid to splash the cash, and therefore it could be a great investment for The Magpies.
Overall, this has been a decent signing.

Everton broke a then-club-record in the summer of 2017 to sign Pickford from Sunderland. The Toffees spent £30m on the ‘keeper, which was seen as a lot at the time.
Since then, Everton endured a fairly torrid season during 2017/18, but look to have improved this season under Marco Silva.
Since arriving at Goodison Park, Pickford has established himself as England’s number one, having a fantastic World Cup, and a decent ‘keeper for The Toffees. He is still prone to an error from time to time, but at the age of 24, there is still a lot to come from him.
TT Grade A-
While Pickford cost significantly more than Dúbravka, he has gone a long way in proving that he is worth the money, particularly shown by his success with the Three Lions.
While Newcastle may be able to make some money from the sale of Dúbravka, Pickford is proving to be a great long-term investment for The Toffees, and it is for that reason he wins this battle, and the fact he doesn’t get along with the Geordie faithful may make that fact a touch more difficult to swallow.
