Bayern masterclass shows why Liverpool target should be Klopp’s dream

The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperately hoping for some reinforcement next season, after a mixed first full season in charge for Jurgen Klopp.

There’s no doubting that the Reds are amongst the most exciting sides in the Premier League when in full flow, though defensive frailty and a thin squad meant their title tilt was over before the New Year.

With that in mind, reports suggesting Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could be keen on a move to Anfield should serve up a lorry load of excitement for Kopites around the world. The England international is reportedly wanting to develop his career as a central midfield, rather than on the wing, and he’d be perfect for Jurgen Klopp’s midfield.

Cast your minds back to his performance against Bayern Munich in the Champions League back in 2014. Deployed in a central area during a frustrating night in the Allianz Arena, the then 20-year-old proved formidable in that berth.

He boasts the physical frame to handle himself in such a crowded area of the park, though his performance that night was defined by the gut-busting runs he so frequently panicked Bayern’s defence with.

The likes of Phillip Lahm, Javi Martinez and Bastian Schweinsteiger were left in his wake and that sort of ability would only flourish in Liverpool’s ‘heavy metal’ midfield.

Adam Lallana and Georginio Wijnaldum have performed well this season, the former especially, though Chamberlain would provide much more of a dynamic presence than the pair.

Indeed, while that should be the main area in which he works, the nature of his deep tactical understanding also allows him to operate in wide areas should Klopp need to shuffle his cards.
