One Arsenal fan in the Transfer Tavern almost choked on a peanut this evening when his friend read him the headlines of today’s papers, which suggested a shock move for Arsenal’s star-man last summer.
The Daily Mail ran with a detailed piece today identifying Bayern Munich’s ‘resent’ with Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil, who rejected the advances of the Bavarian club to sign for Real Madrid as a 21-year-old.
Whilst that was widely reported at the time, and is well known, a surprise also came with the report- as it’s stated Bayern boss Pep Guardiola eyed a move at the beginning of last season, before Arsene Wenger put a block on any exit.
Ozil is the fifth most expensive signing in Premier League history and, at £42.5m, is Arsenal’s record signing. However it hasn’t always been easy for the German, who was widely criticised in the media throughout his first two years at Arsenal.
Better performances this term have led to more admiration for the World Cup winner, who faces Bayern Munich tonight in the Champions League with Arsenal- keen to overcome the demons of two years ago, when he missed an early penalty.
Arsenal fans, are you surprised by Bayern’s continuous interest in Mesut Ozil? Let us know in the comments below!
