The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that their side’s recent spending spree is a sign of things to come. Though usually frugal when it comes to signing players, Arsenal splashed the cash to bring in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January, and with Alexis Sanchez now at Man Utd, there is a hope amongst fans that he will be replaced by a few more big names.
Whether that happens remains to be seen, but there is certainly room for improvement in a few positions within Arsenal’s team. In defence, they’ve looked shaky this season, whilst their midfield has also lacked steel and bite – with Granit Xhaka, in particular, not quite delivering on the promise that came with his transfer.
In the case of the latter, then, the signing of a new central midfielder would make sense, and BBC Pundit Garth Crooks thinks that Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina would fit in perfectly.
Placing the midfielder, who is rated at £13.5 million by Transfer Markt, in his Team of the Week, Crooks has said: “Seriously. Mario Lemina is an Arsenal player if ever I have seen one”.
“For far too long in my opinion, Arsene Wenger has faffed around with the likes of Mohamed Elneny and Francis Coquelin. Wenger should have invested in Lemina during the summer and got in there well before Southampton did”, he added.
Whilst Crooks isn’t quite insisting that Arsenal make a move for him, he’s certainly suggesting that he’d be the ideal player to run the midfield for the Gunners.
Lemina was, of course, a star for the Saints over the weekend – putting in a commanding performance as Mauricio Pellegrino’s team came out 3-2 winners against West Brom.
It’s tough to disagree with Crooks here.
Lemina has been inconsistent at times, but he looks to be finally settling in the Premier League.
He certainly provides that bite and enthusiasm that Arsenal have lacked in recent years, and he was undoubtedly the man of the match against the Baggies.
Southampton won’t want to let him go, though, and so if they were to try and land him, they would likely expect to pay more than the £13.5 million that Transfer Markt value him at.
