BBC Pundit: This Man Utd player deserves far more credit, his work ethic is great

The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern have been disappointed with Wayne Rooney’s fall from grace, but it would appear as though Robbie Savage thinks that the Englishman has a lot more to give…

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, via BBC Sport, Savage said: “He gets hammered and yet he is Manchester United’s and England’s top scorer”.

Elaborating, Savage said: “He is a professional, his work ethic is very good….He is the most under-appreciated footballer we have seen in English football.”

Certainly, it is difficult to disagree with Savage here. Though it seems like a long time ago, once upon a time Wayne Rooney was one of Europe’s most feared forwards. After all, you don’t become top scorer by being an average player. He was the focal point of the Man Utd attack for many years, and that talent simply doesn’t fade overnight.

That being said, Rooney has struggled this year. Void of any quality in front of goal and lacking that finishing touch that made him so lethal, the striker certainly has some work to do to get back to his best – but there is no doubting that he has the talent.

With recent quotes from Rooney hinting that he may look to leave the club this summer if he isn’t afforded regular game time, perhaps it is time for Jose Mourinho to make a decision.
