Arsenal fans are looking confused here in the Football Transfer Tavern as it has been claimed by ESPN that one of their targets has played down links to the club.
Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has moved to dampen talk of a potential move to the Emirates Stadium claiming that he is focused on Sunderland and his future at the club.
He claimed: “I have read about it [the speculation], but I haven’t heard anything [official]. I know there has been talk about Arsenal, but I haven’t heard anything or received a phone call from Arsène Wenger.
“I will stay calm and focused on the Belgium games, and after that, go on holiday with my girlfriend. We will see what happens.”
“I played 38 [league] matches. Few players can say they did that in a Premier League season. I also managed 11 clean sheets, which is not bad if you’re playing at the bottom of the division.
“To do that, you have to be mentally strong, and I think it shows I have progressed a lot as a goalkeeper.”
Wenger of course is on the look out for a new number one for next season and has been linked with a host of stoppers including QPR’s Brazilian international Julio Cesar who was recently reported to be closing in on a move to the Emirates Stadium. Perhaps that’s the reason why Paolo Di Canio’s phone hasn’t been ringing off the hook for Mignolet this summer?
Is Mignolet staying a Black Cat this summer or will someone like Liverpool snap him up? Let us know your thoughts below.
