The Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern have been delighted by the performances of Ben Davies so far this season, but recent reports suggest that he may not hold on to his starting berth next season.
Danny Rose was Tottenham’s first-choice left-back for the best part of half a decade prior to the beginning of the season, but his criticism of the club during the summer combined with injury problems have forced him to play a bit-part role this season. Ben Davies has stepped into Rose’s boots and filled them with the purpose of a player who has no desire to waste a golden opportunity to cement his place in Tottenham’s first-team.
The marauding Welsh international has been in excellent form for the club this season across all-competitions, and considering the rate of his development it seems unlikely that he will surrender his place to Danny Rose at any point in the near-future, barring injury or suspension of course.
However, recent reports emerging from The Daily Mirror suggest that Davies’ place in the first-team could be jeapordised next season. The report claims that Tottenham are in competition with Chelsea and Manchester United for the signature of Paris Saint-Germain’s Layvin Kurzawa.
Kurzawa (valued at £19.8 million by Transfermarkt) has been in excellent form for the French giants this season, but the fact he has had to share the left-back responsibility with Yuri Berchiche could force him out of the club in search of a regular starting berth.
If Kurzawa was to complete a transfer to Spurs, it’s likely he would only do so on the promise that he would immediately be made the first-choice left-back ahead of Ben Davies, so his potential arrival should deeply concern Davies.
Davies certainly deserves to keep his place based on his performances this season, but the links with Kurzawa suggest Pochettino could be inclined to replace him next season and, if that proves to be the case, he will need to step up another gear to ensure he does not play second-fiddle to the French international.
