Despite Arsene Wenger’s continued declarations that he will not be making any new signings in January, the rumours continue to fly, and today the rumours are all about a striker – Freiburg’s Papiss Demba Cisse.
The Senegalese striker has already hit 11 goals in 15 games this season, making him joint-top scorer in the Bundesliga, and it is thought that Wenger will bid £12m for the 25-year-old when the transfer window opens.
The Gunners have had to rely heavily on new signing Marouane Chamakh so far this season, with Robin Van Persie struggling to regain his fitness, and Cisse could give Wenger a valuable alternative attacking option.
News of Arsene’s interest in Cisse has also alerted David Moyes, who will now be given the green light to move for Arsenal’s Nicklas Bendtner. The out of favour Danish striker will be allowed to join Everton on an initial six-month loan, with a view to a permanent transfer at the end of the season. Moyes is thought to have already made enquiries, and Bendtner will be keen on a move in order to secure his spot in the Danish national team after a warning from coach Morten Olsen.
The Denmark coach told Sky Sports News: “Thinking with the eyes of the Danish national team, you have to have minutes and you have to have enough games, and if he’s not playing in Arsenal we cannot use him of course.”
Despite a shortage of strikers at the Emirates, 22-year-old Bendtner has yet to start a game in the Premier League this season, and must therefore feel he is now surplus to requirements. A new striker would certainly be welcome at Everton, with the Goodison Park outfit struggling for goals this campaign, and Moyes will feel that, with Bendtner joining on an initial loan deal, he has nothing to lose.
So everyone’s a winner.
