Alvaro Arbeola, recently released from Champions League winners Real Madrid, is thought to have been mooted as a potential target for the North East giants by those inside the club.
Able to operate at either full-back or centre-half, the 33-year old would potentially go some in replacing the recently released Steven Taylor AND Daryl Janmaat, who is continually linked with moves away.
Benitez originally signed the defender while in charge of Liverpool back in 2009 and worked with him earlier last season while both were employed by Los Blancos.
