The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern are growing increasingly concerned about their side’s Premier League status. Despite impressing in the Championship last term, the Magpies’ transition back to the top flight has been far from smooth.
Despite having, for the most part, a pretty solid squad, Rafael Benitez has struggled to get the best out of his players, and uncertainty surrounding the long-term future of Mike Ashley certainly hasn’t helped.
In truth, whilst Newcastle do have a few good players, they are lacking depth in a number of positions, and so it’s no real surprise to hear reports suggesting that new bodies are wanted by the Spaniard.
According to ESPN, Newcastle are considering a surprising move for Everton winger Aaron Lennon, with Benitez clearly keen to get a few extra options in the attack. Significantly, as ESPN report, Lennon’s contract at Everton expires in the summer – and so a cut-price January purchase could be an option for the Magpies.
Though he has had a tough year or so, Lennon remains a decent option. He still has pace, technical ability and he provides a decent goal threat, and so he would give Benitez a decent option going forward. Significantly, he’s also very experienced – having played for sides including Tottenham and, of course, Everton – and that experience would be key in a relegation dogfight.
Would he be a weekly starter? Perhaps not, but he’d certainly be useful.
A sale makes sense from Everton’s perspective. Sam Allardyce has already revealed that he wants to sell a few players, and Lennon, who is now 30-years-old, would be a logical departure.
Given his likely reduced cost as a result of his contract status, the prospect of a cheap deal certainly is possible for Newcastle.
A move makes sense for the Magpies.
