Benitez continuing Newcastle work behind the scenes as Ashley era drags on

Newcastle United supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week, what with their side only managing a 1-1 draw at home to Swansea City on Saturday, as well as the recent news that a proposed takeover of the club has broken down.

Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the struggling Swans off the back of successive victories to start 2018, but found themselves behind to Carlos Carvalhal’s team on the hour mark through Jordan Ayew. However, the hosts responded as Joselu bagged eight minutes later to secure a point, a result which did neither side much good in their quest to avoid the drop. Add in the recent news that Amanda Staveley’s proposed takeover of the club has collapsed, and there is much pessimism among our resident Magpies fans in the Tavern at present.

As such, many of those Newcastle fans lining up at the bar are getting increasingly restless with owner Mike Ashley, and a recent report from The Northern Echo suggests that manager Benitez is going to make an ‘attempt’ to draw funds out of the Sports Direct chief following the recent takeover breakdown.

The Magpies sit just three points and two places clear of the Premier League’s relegation zone with 15 games of the season remaining, and former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss Benitez has made it abundantly clear that reinforcements are needed during January to avoid a return to the Championship.

However, 18 days into the window and there are still no new signings for Magpies fans to get excited about, with the lingering takeover somewhat generating much uncertainty around the club, only for that to collapse in recent days.

As such, manager Benitez is reportedly readying an ‘attempt’ to draw funds from Ashley in a bid to strengthen his squad, the result of such attempt could go some way to deciding the future of Benitez, and indeed the club’s Premier League status.

Landlord’s verdict: It has been a frustrating few days for Newcastle United fans – first their side can only manage a draw at home to Swansea City, while the proposed takeover of the club from Amanda Staveley’s PCP Capital Partners is all but off.

And that frustration is also likely to be felt by manager Rafa Benitez, who is reportedly going to make an ‘attempt’ to draw funds out of owner Mike Ashley in a bid to get the reinforcements he needs to ensure the club remain in the Premier League come the summer.

And Ashley’s response to this ‘attempt’ may shape the short-term future of the club – Benitez may walk if his demands are not met, while failure to bring in adequate additions raises the prospect of relegation back to the Championship.

Thus, there appears to be hugely important days on the horizon for Newcastle.
