While losing on the weekend is never good news for the Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern, the performance against Manchester City over the course of the weekend did impress our punters clad in black and white.
Still, while the Magpies did themselves justice at the Etihad on Saturday evening, it was obvious that Rafa Benitez desperately requires some January additions. That’s a theme that’s been running along since pretty much this time last year, much to the frustration of our resident Geordies.
With that in mind, comments in the Times’ report talking about Rafa Benitez extending his contract have proven really rather interesting. They claim the Spaniard is eager to shelve talks about a new deal and focus on bringing in players during the final days of this window, with the 57-year-old believed to have had a direct call with Mike Ashley.
He and the Sports Direct mogul are understood to have shared a conference call last week and a £20m striker is reportedly atop Benitez’s wishlist this month. That’d break the Toon’s long-standing transfer record, one set by the signing of Michael Owen for £16m back in 2005, and a development that’d certainly excite the Newcastle fans who frequent over Tavern in their droves.
It couldn’t be more important for Newcastle to land a marquee marksman this month. Indeed, while Joselu tries his very best, the Spaniard simply can’t cut it in front of goal and if the Toon Army are going to stave off relegation, a new striker is desperately needed.
Sadly for Mike Ashley, they’re always going to cost big money.
