Inter Milan have joined Manchester United and Arsenal in the race for Danish goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard. Inter boss Rafa Benitez is keen to bring in Lindegaard as cover for Julio Cesar and is hoping to win his signature ahead of his old adversaries.
Lindegaard, twenty six, currently plays for Aalesund in the Danish league and it is believed his club are willing to sell. Lindegaard is Aalesund’s prize asset and though they are willing to sell it would be on condition that he is loaned back for the remainder of the season.
The Big Dane is six foot four inches tall and shows obvious comparisons to former United legend Peter Schmeichel. He has made seventy one league appearances over the last six years for a number of clubs. He’s played for OB, Kolding and his current club.
While he would be back up for Julio Cesar at Inter it is most likely he would be brought in to challenge for the number one jersey at Arsenal or United.
Arsene Wenger disappointed his club’s fans by not bringing in a goalkeeper over the summer, though at one point it looked like Mark Schwarzer was on his way. Manuel Almunia has been pretty ropey over the last year so Arsenal could really do with bringing in some decent competition for him.
Edwin van der Sar, despite still being a top class keeper, is forty years old next month and won’t be able to keep playing at the same standard for much longer. Fergie may get one more season out of him after this so to bring in Lindegaard now would be good timing. Let him settle in for a season and then bring into the first team as a replacement for the Dutchman.
While Benitez may be keen on signing the Danish international I don’t see why he would choose Inter over United or Arsenal when he’s got considerably more chance of being number one at either of the Premiership clubs.
