The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern are beginning to get increasingly concerned about their side’s prospects this season. The Magpies are currently in the relegation zone, and their chances of dropping back into the Championship are beginning to look like a very real possibility.
Rafael Benitez, then, has a big task on his hands as he looks to turn the ship around, and according to the Shield Gazette, the Spaniard has identified quite the target for the new year. David Luiz is reportedly the player in question, and Benitez is said to be looking to capitalise on the falling out between Luiz and Chelsea manager Antonio Conte.
A loan move is of interest to the Magpies, with Benitez clearly keen to steady the ship at St James’ Park.
Though audacious, a move for Luiz could be just what Newcastle need. He’d bring the leadership, experience, and perhaps most importantly, the quality to completely revolutionise the Magpies’ back-line. The Brazilian proved himself as one of the most consistent defenders in Europe last season, and his lack of game time at Stamford Bridge this term speaks more of the quality of Andreas Christensen, rather than his own lack thereof.
Still, a move remains unlikely, with Luiz likely to set his sights far higher if he is to depart, but it appears as though the intention is there from Benitez at least.
This is unlikely to happen, but it’s clear that Newcastle need reinforcements.
A player of David Luiz’s quality would certainly help a lot, as they’ve really struggled at the back this season.
That being said, they might need to alter their sights somewhat, as a move for the Brazilian is unlikely – with Chelsea not really likely to look to loan out a player that is already 30-years-old.
