The Newcastle United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are pleased that their side have comfortably managed to avoid a relegation battle this season following their recent run of good form.
The Magpies might have lost their two most recent Premier League fixtures, but there’s no doubt that they have been vastly improved on the whole since the end of the January transfer window. Newcastle’s form has enabled them to climb away from the bottom three in a manner which suggests they could be set to mount a genuine push for Europa League football next season.
Rafa Benitez’s side certainly should not get overly carried away with their purple patch as they still have plenty of issues to iron out before they can dream of qualifying for Europe next season. One issue which needs to be addressed is the lack of depth within the squad, esepcially in attacking positions.
Ayoze Perez has been entrusted with the number ten role almost unconditionally throughout the entirety of the season so far due to a lack of options and Benitez’s seemingly wholehearted faith in his compatriots abilities. Benitez’s patience in Perez has been rewarded in recent weeks as the Spaniard has scored 3 goals and assisted 1 from his previous 5 outings in the league.
However, Perez cannot continue to operate in that role without a worthy challenger to battle for his place, as both Newcastle’s and Perez’s personal development will suffer as a consequence. With that being said, Benitez should consider making a risky move for Everton’s disastrous summer signing, namely Davy Klaassen (valued at £16.2 million by Transfermarkt) during the upcoming transfer window.
The Dutch international arrived at Goodison Park last summer with a glowing reputation following a successful opening to his career with Dutch giants Ajax. In the 2016/17 season, the 25-year-old notched 20 goals and provided 12 assists from 50 outings as an attacking midfielder, so clearly there is a talent waiting to be unearthed in English football.
Since arriving at Everton he has effectively been frozen out of the club as he is rarely selected for the match-day squad, never mind the starting eleven. Clearly, Klaassen and Everton have proven to be incompatible, but at St James’ Park he would have a fantastic opportunity to wipe the slate clean and prove himself in the Premier League, so Newcastle should offer him a second chance during the summer window.
