The Toon Army in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that Benitez can land a couple of huge signings this month to save them from relegation to The Championship.
Newcastle United have been in resurgent form of late, as they have managed to claim 7 points from their last four fixtures and move into 13th position in the Premier League table. However, The Magpies are only two points clear from safety in the congested bottom half of the table, and new signings this month may well be necessary to ensure they avoid an immediate return to the second-tier of English football.
So far this season, one of Benitez’s main problems has been his side’s lack of ability to find the back of the net, as their toothless record of 20 goals from 22 fixtures clearly illustrates.
With that to consider, Benitez should be in the market for a striker this month, and he should take note of Papis Cisse’s transfer to St James’ Park in the January window of 2012 as an indication of the success that can be found with mid-season acquisitions.
Cisse was relatively unknown when he completed his transfer from Freiburg to Newcastle in 2012, but he took little to no time to announce himself in the top-flight, as he scored a staggering 13 goals in 14 league matches for the club – including a famous wonder strike in a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.
One player who should be on Benitez’s wishlist as a player to potentially emulate the prolific record of Cisse during the second half of the 2011/12 season is Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge.
Sturridge is massively out of favour under Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, so Newcastle should be able to tempt The Reds with an offer this month whether it be on loan or permanent.
The England international has previously shown that he can demonstrate a prolific goal-scoring ability on par with the level Cisse reached in 2012, so Benitez should take the lessons from the past into consideration and do everything he can to lure Sturridge to Tyneside this month.
