The Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern were delighted to kick off the new year with a victory which moved them away from the relegation zone in the Premier League. Indeed, It had been a tough end to 2017 for the newly promoted side but Ayoze Perez’s goal against Stoke City earned Newcastle a narrow 1-0 victory to lift them to 13th – two points off the drop zone.
Newcastle will now be looking at the January transfer window and hoping that they can bring in players who are likely to keep them up. With a potential investment coming in from new ownership, it is an exciting time for the Magpies but the first priority is to strengthen the side significantly to avoid the drop.
Rafa Benitez will undoubtedly be scouring the market for a striker this January. It is clear that while Dwight Gayle and Joselu provide decent back-up options, they are not out-and-out Premier League quality strikers who will keep Newcastle up on their own.
Benitez therefore needs to look at bringing Andy Carroll back to Tyneside. After his double against West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday night, the physical centre-forward is now rediscovering his form and would probably jump at the chance to rejoin his old club.
It has been a frustrating year for the 28-year-old but a move back to Newcastle for the Geordie boy would improve his chances of playing time and this could lead to an unlikely England call-up for the 2018 World Cup squad.
As for Newcastle, they would benefit from having one of the most devastating aerial presences in the world at their disposal. Even if he is used as an impact substitute, there are very few defenders in the Premier League who could cope with a fully fit Andy Carroll in the air.
His physicality and Premier League experience up top is exactly what Newcastle are crying out for this window.
