Newcastle United supporters have been somewhat downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side lose 1-0 at Burnley on Monday night, in turn suffering their fourth Premier League defeat of the campaign.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Lancashire-based outfit off the back of a 1-0 success over basement side Crystal Palace the week previous, but they were unable to record consecutive victories by winning at Turf Moor. In fact, the Magpies came away with nothing as a Jeff Hendrick strike 16 minutes from time was enough to secure a 1-0 victory for Sean Dyche’s side, which in turn moved them above Benitez’s team into seventh in the Premier League table.
Thus, it has been a frustrating week for our resident Newcastle fans, and they are also likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Chronicle, which suggests that Aleksandar Mitrovic could again be available for transfer in January.
The 23-year-old made the move to St James’ Park back in 2015 and has since gone on to play 68 games for the Magpies, in which time he has scored 17 goals and laid on ten assists.
However, the Serbia international has been out-of-favour under Benitez this term and as such has been restricted to just three appearances in all competitions, of which he has netted in two of them.
And with only 25 Championship appearances last term, it’s clear that Mitrovic isn’t convincing the Newcastle chief of his capabilities, and as such it reportedly seems that Benitez will attempt to offload him in January having reportedly tried to move the striker on in the past two windows.
Thus, it seems that Mitrovic’s short time in the North East could well be coming to an end in the New Year.
Landlord’s verdict: Aleksandar Mitrovic is certainly a very talented striker and one several sides would want in their squad, but it seems pretty evident that Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez doesn’t trust him to do a job in his team.
The 23-year-old has only played three times for the Magpies this term and has netted in two of them, but hasn’t featured in three of their last four Premier League matchday squads to suggest that he is not at the forefront of Benitez’s plans.
And it seems that a January move could well be in the offing for the Serbia international, and with a World Cup coming up at the end of the campaign, it’s a move which would appear to be in the best interests of both parties.
