Newcastle United supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week, what with their side only managing a 1-1 draw with Swansea City last time out, alongside the recent news that the proposed takeover of the club has collapsed.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the struggling Swans last weekend off the back of successive victories to start 2018, and would have seen a home clash against the bottom side as an ideal opportunity to move clear of danger. Yet they could only take a point from proceedings with Jordan Ayew’s opener cancelled out by Joselu’s effort eight minutes later, a result which has since seen the Magpies drop to 15th in the division. Add in the recent news that Amanda Staveley’s proposed takeover of the club is off, and there are many deflated Newcastle fans in the Tavern at present heading into this weekend’s trip to Premier League leaders Manchester City.
And with takeover news very much the subject of many chats among our resident Magpies fans this week, they are likely to be intrigued by recent comments from manager Benitez in discussion with BBC Newcastle (via BBC Newcastle commentator Matthew Raisbeck on Twitter) regarding the takeover.
The Spaniard has made it abundantly clear that reinforcements are needed this month if his side are to stave off relegation come the end of the season, and with the club just three places and three points clear of danger, he’s probably not wrong.
However, 19 days into the window and there are still no incomings at St James’ Park, and Benitez was asked about the situation in discussion with BBC Newcastle on Friday, in which he admitted that he knew the takeover wasn’t going to happen up to a month ago.
He said: ‘I knew three or four weeks ago when I was talking with Mike Ashley. So, for me, this has changed nothing.
‘It’s just to be sure the club has some names, some targets – and we have to try to get these players.’
But with less than two weeks to go until the end of the window, several of our resident Newcastle fans are deeply concerned that they won’t bring in the reinforcements needed to stay up, a failure which may also result in Benitez resigning from his position as manager.
Landlord’s verdict: Newcastle United fans were dealt a significant blow earlier this week with news that Amanda Staveley’s proposed takeover of the club was off, although it seems that manager Rafa Benitez knew well before that the deal wasn’t going to happen.
The Magpies chief revealed just as much to BBC Newcastle on Friday, and as such admitted that it hasn’t altered anything in terms of possible incomings, of which there have been none in the 19 days of the January window.
And for nothing to have changed for Benitez, and still the club awaiting a first signing of the window, there are unsurprisingly many concerned Magpies fans in the Tavern at present.
