The transfer chatter never stops here at The Transfer Tavern, especially after Ulysses Sanchez-Flor from MARCA popped in to tell us about a new twist in the Xabi Alonso/Real Madrid saga.
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is reportedly more keen to retain the services of Javier Mascherano, Alonso’s rival in central midfield, rather than the 27-year-old. Both players have been linked with moves to La Liga but the Reds boss believes that the tough-tackling Argentine would link up with captain Steven Gerrard in the middle of the park better than Alonso.
With Gerrard already committing his future to the club, Benitez is determined to ensure that Mascherano does the same, ending all talk of him leaving to join Barcelona. This means that Alonso’s exit from Anfield seems all the more likely, with the funds from his sale being earmarked for a move for Valencia winger David Silva. Benitez is a keen admirer of the player and is believed to view him as a long-term replacement for Albert Riera.
What liquid refreshment fulled this rumour? Is Rafa really going to give up the fight to keep Alonso at Anfield? Should this rumour Fly or Die?
