The Newcastle fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are eagerly awaiting the start of the new season as the Rafalution takes them back into the Premier League after a season’s absence.
However, before they get going back in the top flight manager Rafa Benitez has a lot to do in terms of building his side ready to take on the best once again.
While, as our landlord points out, most of the recruitment since the Spaniard took the helm has been with a view to being a Premier League club, the squad still isn’t quite there.
With that in mind, the former Liverpool manager is looking to add some more bite up top with his summer signings and has been told he must break the club’s transfer record to land Leicester City’s Demarai Gray, according to the Newcastle Chronicle.
The report claims that any deal for the Foxes’ No.7 would set the Magpies back £20m, surpassing the £16m paid for Michael Owen back in 2005.
Newcastle fans, we want to hear from you! Do you think Gray would make the move to St. James’ Park? If so, is he worth a club record £20m fee? Let us know in the comments below…
