The Toon Army were absolutely ecstatic in the Transfer Tavern last weekend after their side stormed to a season-defining 3-0 victory over Southampton at St James’ Park.
Newcastle United faced one of their biggest tests of the season so far on Saturday afternoon in a relegation six-pointer clash against a side who are also fighting for their lives down the bottom end of the table, and they passed that test with flying colours to move into 13th place in the table. Crucially, The Magpies are now 5 points clear of the relegation zone with 8 fixtures left to play, and the breathing space their latest win has provided them with should enable them to play with greater freedom in the weeks to come.
One of Newcastle’s standout performers from the weekend was undoubtedly their Brazilian winger Kenedy (valued at£6.3 million by Transfermarkt) who scored a first-half brace to put the home side in control of proceedings before Matt Richie added a killer third after the break.
According to The Northern Echo the quality of Kenedy’s performances since arriving from Chelsea in January have convinced Rafa Benitez that he should do everything he can to turn his loan move into a permanent one at the end of the season. The 22-year-old has injected a level of creativity in the final-third that was so blatantly absent from Newcastle’s performances throughout the first-half of the season.
The Magpies pose a markedly increased attacking threat when Kenedy is in the side, so it’s no wonder that Benitez is planning on securing a deal for his services in the summer. A move for Kenedy would undoubtedly represent a step in the right direction for a club who have so regularly been criticised for showing a lack of ambition in the transfer market, but his transfer would also have a direct impact on a particular individual on Newcastle’s books.
Indeed, Kenedy’s arrival would also enable Aleksandar Mitrovic to kick-start his career on Tyneside after he completes his loan spell at Fulham. The Serbian international has been an absolute revelation since moving to Craven Cottage in January, as he already boasts a staggering record of 7 goals from 6 starts in The Championship.
His form in the second tier of English football suggests that he could be ready to finally live up to his potential with Newcastle by replicating his recent goal-scoring form in the top-flight, and the arrival of Kenedy would certainly aid his cause. Kenedy’s ability to create opportunities in the final third would increase the number of chances for Mitrovic infront of goal, so supporters of the North-East giants should be hoping Benitez can sign him in the summer to effectively sign two new players for the price of one.Like what the TT have on offer?
