The Toon Army in the Transfer Tavern are desperately hoping for a swift conclusion to negotiations between Mike Ashley and Amanda Staveley.
As is so often the case at Newcastle in years gone by, events that are taking place off the field are overshadowing what is happening on the pitch right now. Speculation regarding the ownership at the club has persisted since Ashley put Newcastle up for sale back in October, and the Toon Army in the Tavern are eager for a conclusion to be reached sooner rather than later.
The conclusion of negotiations between Staveley and Ashley will be pivotal to Newcastle’s aspirations this season, as their level of transfer activity in the January window will determine their chances of survival.
As things stand, Rafa Benitez needs to land a minimum of three quality players next month to give the club any chance of staying up considering the lack of quality available within his current squad.
The current standard of the squad is way below the level required to compete in the Premier League, and whether it be Staveley or Ashley, the owner need to heavily invest in fresh talent next month to avoid the prospect of becoming England’s next yo-yo club.
It is unclear exactly how much money there will be to spend at Newcastle in January due to the uncertainty surrounding the ownership, but regardless of the situation, Benitez must be given the funds to land a tricky winger, a clinical striker and an experienced central defender in January.
Without these key acquisitions, Newcastle will find themselves in real danger of finishing in the relegation zone this season.
