Harry Maguire has been brilliant at the heart of Leicester City’s defence since arriving at the King Power from Hull City last summer.
Manager Claude Puel will now be desperate to find a suitable central defensive partner for the 25-year-old with captain Wes Morgan no longer looking the part, and Filip Benkovic may just be that man.
While Morgan is currently struggling at the King Power and has already been sent off twice this campaign, Benkovic is making the most of his loan spell at Celtic Park with Celtic assistant manager Chris Davies highlighting just how impressed he has been with the Croatian in the few appearances he has made for the club so far.
“I’ve been impressed with Filip,” Davies told Celtic’s official club website. “We did our work before he came in so we knew all about his qualities. He is very imposing with his size and he’s dominant aerially. He’s good attacking aerially as well, although he hasn’t scored yet.
“He’s a big imposing figure and is technically good on the ball. He can play short and long passes with quality and is a defender who can defend with good aggression. Hopefully with momentum and playing games, that’ll get him really going.”
With that in mind, Puel should definitely consider keeping Benkovic around the club next season and partnering him up with Maguire, especially with Morgan’s decline.
Leicester, of course, also have Caglar Soyuncu as a long-term option to consider. But with the former SC Freiburg man currently playing in Premier League 2, Benkovic is likely to return to the club as a more experienced defender.
And if so, the Croatia U21 international should be the one to get the nod going forward.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
