The Daily Express has reported that David Bentley looks set to leave Tottenham after a heated argument with boss Harry Redknapp. The 25-year-old England international has failed to live up to expectations since his £15million move to White Hart Lane from Blackburn and his career has faltered in the last 18 months.
Bentley was playing in a friendly game on Tuesday but Redknapp took exception to the player’s performance and perceived lack of application. Supposedly Bentley was treating the match as if it were an exhibition with a plethora of back-heels and fancy flicks. When challenged by Redknapp a row erupted between the two during which Redknapp may have insinuated that he was going to offload Bentley in January.
Bentley has struggled in recent times, a conviction for drink-driving has created more column inches than anything he has done on the pitch this season and it appears Redknapp is ready to give up on the ex-Arsenal man. At the end of the last transfer window it emerged that he was close to a move to Manchester City that would have seen Martin Petrov move the other way. Mark Hughes is known to be an admirer of Bentley’s from their time working together at Blackburn but it is unknown whether he would be willing to resurrect his interest.
Bentley’s Tottenham career has been winding down for a while now and it seems that this recent confrontation with the manager will see him leave Tottenham as the manager seeks to raise funds to strengthen other areas of the squad.
