Everyone in the world of football is expecting Manchester United to complete the signing of Wesley Sneijder from Inter Milan.
On the off chance that this deal fails to materialise however, Ferguson, savvy as ever, has lined up an adequate replacement in Christian Eriksen.
Eriksen is one of the hottest prospects in Europe and will command a significant fee for a player of 19. With 9 caps for Denmark already to his name, Eriksen has a bright future ahead of him.
Caughtoffside.com suggests that Ferguson is willing to pay £25m for the playmaker but with Ajax having sold superstar striker Luis Suarez for only £22m, this suggestion of this fee can be dismissed.
What is much more likely is that Ferguson is willing to discuss a deal in the region of £10-15m. He does however face serious competition from around Europe, not least of all from Arsenal.
In January, Arsenal were thought to be close to a deal, having fended off interest from both Milan clubs, and Juventus.
Arsene Wenger is in frequent dialogue with Dennis Bergkamp – now one of the coaches at Ajax, who is full of praise for the Danish youngster. Wenger hopes that the occasional word in the ear from the Arsenal great will tempt Eriksen to the Emirates.
Eriksen was at one stage described as the “new Dennis Bergkamp” and would in easily at Arsenal.
Wenger was said to prefer for Eriksen to stay at Ajax for at least another year but the imminent departures of key players Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri may force his hand.
