Bertrand hasn’t been good enough and Southampton should replace him with Chelsea outcast

Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern are in a much better mood following a huge win over Bournemouth at the weekend which left them just a point away from Premier League safety.

The Saints remain in the drop zone, but they are just one point behind Swansea with the two sides scheduled to meet at the Liberty Stadium in under two weeks.

Relegation would see the Premier League clubs raid St. Marys for the best talent the south coast has to offer with Cedric and Ryan Bertrand linked with moves away in recent weeks. Though both retain an obviously high standard of quality, neither international full-back has been anywhere near good enough this season.

Bertrand, in particular, has invoked the ire of our punters clad in red and white stripes on numerous occasions over the course of the season and – relegated or not – not many of our south coast locals would be too bothered about seeing him depart.

Still, should he depart, he will need replacing.

One target should be Chelsea defender – Abdul Baba Rahman. The 23-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2015 from Augsburg but has found first-team football hard to come by.

The Ghanaian has been loaned out twice to Schalke with the latest deal not expiring until 2019. However, the Blues could be tempted to offload him permanently if Southampton comes in with the right offer. The left-back is valued at £7.2m by Transfermarkt.

Rahman has a fantastic engine and bags of pace meaning he can be utilised at left wing-back or even at left wing. Despite his struggles in England, he is young enough to turn his career around, and Southampton have a fantastic reputation for developing youngsters.

It wouldn’t be the first time a struggling star moved to St. Marys and turned out to be a success.

Southampton fans, who do you want to replace Ryan Bertrand if he leaves? Let us know!
