‘Better than Maldini’ ‘ Big signing’ – Everton fans loving links to £13.5m-rated international

The Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping their club will shortly address the left-back issue which plagued them for the majority of the previous campaign, and recent reports have given them reason to believe a deal is looming on the horizon.

According to Sky Sports, Everton are interested in signing Hertha Berlin’s Marvin Plattenhardt (valued at £13.5 million by Transfermarkt) this summer. Any potential deal for the 26-year-old may need to be placed on hold until after the World Cup as he has travelled to Russia with the German national side.

Plattenhardt is not expected to start ahead of Jonas Hector during the tournament, but an injury or suspension to FC Koln’s star could allow the Everton supporters to see their potential signing in action.

In response to reports, the Everton supporters have taken to Twitter to call for their club to complete a deal for his services as a long-term replacement for the ageing Leighton Baines.

With Baines now something of a veteran at 33-years-old and Cuco Martina simply below the level which is required to succeed in the Premier League, it seems a fitting window for Everton to complete the signing of a quality left-back.

Plattenhardt’s free-kick taking ability seems to be the overriding quality which is exciting the Everton supporters and there are certainly parallels to be drawn between the German international and Baines in that regard.

Whether he is defensively astute enough to make the step up to the Premier League remains to be seen, but it’s clear the Everton supporters are impressed enough by his attacking qualities to urge their club to conclude a deal for his services.

Here’s what the Everton fans have had to say in response to the latest reports…
