With Chelsea being the last British team on the champions league, many in the UK will be watching heir match of Wednesday against Benfica. But some will be watching for very different reasons.
Bot Manchester clubs are likely to have scouts present at the game as they get set to battle over Argentine winger Nicolas Gaitan
The Portuguese league is fast joining the French and Dutch leagues as one of the main fishing pools for the big Prem clubs, and both want to return to it to sign the one of the best the league has to offer, the fast and versatile Gaitan.
It has been discovered the winger, who cost Benfica just £7million, has a £40 million buy-out clause, small change to City, but enough for United to have to think twice before making a move. But fear not Manchester United fans, Benfica are reportedly willing to accept offers of closer to the £20 million mark.
Is all this just idle speculation? No, the word straight from the horses mouth – “We believe that Nicolas is going to England in the summer,” a Benfica source told The Mirror.
As City and United look to go head to head for this player come summer it will be a chance for the rest of us to see if United really remain the bigger club, or even if they are the bigger club, can City’s mega-money make the matter void. Only one player, but a host of issues surrounding him, and the future of the Manchester rivalry.
