There are gaggles of Chelsea fans all desperate for their club to sign Gary Cahill who looks every inch a fantastic Premier League defender. His recent displays for England alongside John Terry allowed his stock to rise even further and now, according to The Metro, a host of top European clubs are looking at him.
With his contract set to expire next summer, clubs outside England can approach Cahill on January to sign him free of charge on a pre-contract. Those interested include Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan, Juventus and Inter Milan.
Gary Cahill has established a reputation for being an exciting defender who’s tough to beat and has a knack for scoring goals. His calm presence and good ball-playing abilities would certainly allow him to fit in at a club like Barcelona or AC Milan who will be on the look-out for defensive recruits sooner rather than later.
He is not on par with the likes of Thiago Silva, Giorgio Chiellini or Gerard Pique, but he’ll be one of the best free transfers conducted this century if he swaps clubs for a European one. If Chelsea want him they need to act early on in January. He is still going to cost in excess of £7m despite him only having 6 months left on his deal.
Gary Cahill would look great next to John Terry for Chelsea just like he did for England. It is likely that Cahill would stay in England given the chance, so Chelsea are still in with a good shout in snapping him up.
Would Cahill succeed abroad or would he flop even at Chelsea? What should his next move be?
