The Leeds United fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping Marcelo Bielsa can use his rich history in football to his advantage this summer, as the Argentine’s history working with Man City’s Pep Guardiola could enable him to sign an exciting midfielder.
With Bielsa at the helm, the Whites faithful propping up our bar are beginning to believe that a genuine push for promotion could be on the cards next season, but they appreciate their activity in the transfer market will be the truest indicator of their potential to finish inside the top-six.
Plenty of names have been thrown about the tavern by our punters who are desperate to see players of high quality sign for the club, and one name who has been relatively absent from conversations so far is Patrick Roberts.
The Manchester City winger (valued at £6.75 million by Transfermarkt) has been widely tipped to move to Leicester City this summer as part of the expected Riyad Mahrez deal, but the Foxes’ decision to spend £20 million on Norwich City’s James Maddison suggests Roberts might not be moving to the King Power after all.
If that does indeed prove to be the case, the door should be open for Leeds to make an approach for Roberts this summer as he will undoubtedly be surplus to requirements at the Etihad, and it’s an approach they simply must make if they wish to add a significant layer of quality to their attacking midfield.
At just 21-years-of-age Roberts has huge scope for improvement, but his performances for Celtic since Feburary 2016 suggest he already has plenty to offer. Roberts is at his most devastating when he cuts inside from the right-wing onto his favoured left-foot before slicing defences apart with perfectly weighted passes and dazzling dribbling.
The flair and creativity which Roberts could install into Leeds’ attacking dynamic would give the club a huge advantage in their bid to achieve promotion next season, and there’s no doubt the supporters would love watching him in action.
Whether Leeds can afford to sign him on a permanent deal remains to be seen, but a loan deal is both financially feasible and realistic, so Bielsa should use his positive relationship with Pep Guardiola to his advantage by bringing Man City’s prodigy to Yorkshire this summer.
