Billionaire clubs Manchester City, and Chelsea are both reportedly on the hunt for Benfica striker Nelson Oliveira. The twenty year old striker has been an inspiration for the Portuguese side, and it seems both clubs want to acquire his services.
While he is currently on loan at Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna for the season, he has a £20 million buy out clause in his contract which both the Premier League champions, and the Champions League winners, are so eager to expose. Should the race for his signature boil down to one of these two clubs, which one would be a more suitable destination?
It all boils down to which club would guarantee to showcase his talents on a regular basis in the Premier League, which would probably end up being at Stamford Bridge. Unless you are the finished article considered world class, then a player is not going to get the chance to make an attempt to claim a first team berth at Manchester City. If you’re not Lionel Messi, David Villa, or Ronaldo, then there isn’t much hope of getting past the likes of Dzeko, and Balotelli just for a place on the substitutes bench. That still doesn’t include getting past the incredible, and established talents of Aguero and Tevez.
At Chelsea however, Oliveira would be given a chance to shine. Judgement is still out on whether Torres has truly regained the form that once made him one of the most feared strikers in the world, Sturridge has stalled in his development, and their remaining strikers are…not there. Chelsea are bereft of forwards, with Lukakku on loan at West Brom, and standing at over six foot in height, Oliveira can provide a different option up front if Torres is ineffectual during a game.
His towering height can be used to hold up the ball and allow the likes of Hazard, and Mata to push forward from the flanks to provide further striking support. Chelsea need someone similar to the Drogba mold if they are to build on the European success of last season, and Oliveira could just be the man to provide that possibility.
