Liverpool fans here in the Tavern are pleased that the first-team seems to have brushed off any lingering injury problems, although the same can’t be said about youth team.
The Reds have managed to produce some Kop legends in years gone by with Jamie Carragher, Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard forever in their hearts. And, there’s one player in particular that’s already taken up a similar path after making a name for himself in 2017, to now be dubbed as the Reds’ brightest prospect moving forward. However, he suffered the first major setback in his short career thus far, with the Liverpool injury curse seemingly now grasping hold of the youth-team. As according to reports in the Daily Mail, Liverpool starlet Rhian Brewster is unlikely to play again this season as they await the verdict of his knee operation.
The 17-year-old damaged his ankle ligaments a couple of weeks ago during the Reds under-23 side’s fixture against Manchester City, and this looks like being his last playing time this season as manager Neil Critchley admits the main focus is on the long-term fitness of the striker.
‘He’s going to be out for a significant period of time whatever happens. We’re just waiting on the specialist to say, ‘Yeah, we think it’s better to have surgery’ or ‘no he doesn’t (need it)’.
‘I wouldn’t want to say it’s ‘season over’, but you’re talking at least two months so there’s the end of March.’
‘I don’t think we should rush him back either. What’s more important now for Rhian is we do the right thing by him and he comes back in a fit, stable condition and hopefully stronger than when he was playing for us.’
Although reluctant to rule the striker out for the remainder of the season, it’s clear to see that the 17-year-old has very much become their golden boy since bringing home the Golden Boot award and a World Cup winner’s medal last year. As 2017 proved to be a huge turning point in the young player’s career, with a lot of buzz and excitement now being heard about the potential future Rhian Brewster could have at Anfield.
A huge miss for the Reds academy, as a player that was prolific for them after coming on leaps and bounds last year, with his time potentially being cut short this year creating great disappointment for the club. And, with him showing glimpses of becoming a future star, the progression and safety of the youngster is something that Liverpool will look to treat with caution.
