Big mistake: Chelsea’s 88-cap international that should have left Stamford Bridge by now

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are always concerned about the prospect of major players leaving the club. That’s particularly true of this season, given their side’s failure to get into the Champions League ahead of next term.

It’s a very real concern, and it’s one that our landlord thinks should be realised, particularly in the case of Eden Hazard. Hazard has been at Chelsea since 2012, and he’s had a remarkable career, but he should really have left a few years ago now.

After all, it’s fair to say that he hasn’t quite achieved the desired success at Stamford Bridge. Sure, he’s won a couple of Premier Leagues and a few cups, but it hasn’t exactly been constant success. To the contrary, there have been moments in which the Belgian has looked like the only player deserving of a trophy – and that was particularly true of last season. He carried his team on his shoulders at points, and that indicates that he’s at a level above Chelsea.

However, beyond the mere fact of wanting to win more trophies, there should be more motivation for Hazard to quit. Simply put, he is a player that would flourish under the right conditions, namely in a team that plays to his strengths. That hasn’t been the case at Chelsea, as he has often been forced to defend more rigidly and place less focus on attacking. At a team like Real Madrid, meanwhile, he would be able to focus on what he does best – attack – and that would not only lead to more success for his team, but it would also lead to more personal success, in that he’d be in better positions to score and assist more.

In truth, Hazard has looked better than Chelsea for a few years now, and it’s been a mistake for him to remain at the club for so long. Given the disarray that Chelsea are currently in, though, now is the ideal time for him to get out.
