The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping to see some changes in North London this summer. Despite another decent year for Spurs, their transfer cabinet is still bare, and that clearly needs to change.
Mauricio Pochettino has a big task on his hands to take his side to the next level next season, and much of that work will bed one this summer. A few major signings are expected, and so reports from the Daily Mail indicating that a few players will be sold came as no surprise.
However, one thing that did come as a surprise was the suggestion that one of those players could be Mousa Dembele. Dembele, who is rated at £16.2 million by Transfer Markt, would be a major casualty this summer – and our landlord thinks that it would be Pochettino’s biggest mistake in years if it does happen.
After all, Dembele has been absolutely crucial this season for the Lilywhites. He’s been a real stalwart in the heart of the midfield, and whilst the likes of Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier’s form has been unpredictable, his has remained consistent.
His best performance of the season came against Juventus, and it was a simply stunning display from the Lilywhites after a slow start. Dembele deserves a lot of praise for that game. He proved that despite his age, he’s still as important as ever.
Losing him this summer, then, would be a disaster. There is arguably nobody in Europe at present that provides the job that he does, and whilst Pochettino is working on that – with young Harry Winks coming through – the Englishman isn’t ready yet.
Dembele must be kept for another year at least – or Pochettino will regret it.
