Bizarre Champions League clause included in failed Newcastle takeover talks – Report

Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez has been left extremely frustrated in his pursuit of January transfer targets, with the potential sale of the club causing chairman Mike Ashley to withhold funds from the Spanish boss.

Fans here in The Transfer Tavern are very concerned that their club could be left with the same squad that entered the new year, and a lack of new additions could cost them their place in the Premier League this year. Our landlord caught up with fans in the beer garden to gauge their thoughts on the holdup, with the majority desperate to see Mike Ashley accept a bid for the club from potential buyer, Amanda Staveley. The Geordie bunch could now be about to get their wish, with The Telegraph reporting today that Staveley has been told to submit an offer of around £300 million without clauses to ensure her takeover of the club is completed. One such clause in an initial offer included a £50 million payment should the Magpies win the Champions League.

This is the figure that the Sports Direct mogul will consider, although The Telegraph reports that sources close to the businessman have suggested that they do not expect progress to be made with any potential buyer until at least the middle of March.

Landlord’s Verdict: It appears this saga is set to drag on long into the season, and Rafa will have to make do with what he is given this month as he looks to improve his squad. However, despite criticism of Ashley, the man cannot be blamed for rejecting a £250 million bid which included clauses such as £50 million to be paid in the event of the club winning the Champions League, it just simply isn’t a feasible offer. In fact, it’s derisory.

If Staveley is serious about taking over at St James’ Park, she must begin to make serious offers to the current owner, or risk losing out to another investor in the coming months.
