There is a whole host of disappointed faces here in the Football Transfer Tavern as Metro report that one of the most wanted transfer targets is set to stay in Spain with current club Real Madrid.
Xabi Alonso has been on the radar of Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United and it had seemed that a move back to England would be likely.
Now however, as it so often turns out to be the case, Alonso seems like he will be rejecting the chance for a final swansong in the Premier League, much to the disappointment of a host of our punters.
Now, as our landlord points out, we will be denied not only the chance to see Alonso link up with former manager Jose Mourinho again, but also the possibility of a return to Liverpool – and what a prospect that would have been.
Alonso missed the first part of the season due to injury and had previously shown exactly why he is deserving of a new contract with the club.
He may be 32, but he is still one of the best in his position around and is someone that all three Premier League clubs could most definitely do with having on their books.
Now it seems the Spanish international will be staying in Spain while chasing after the ever elusive La Decima with Real Madrid.
Could Chelsea or Liverpool really have done with Alonso in their squad? Let us know your thoughts below.
