Both Everton and Newcastle United fans have been particularly quiet in the Transfer Tavern this week following their sides’ respective struggles last time out.
Ronald Koeman’s Toffees could only manage a 2-2 draw at home to Apollon Limassol in the Europa League on Thursday evening to keep them winless in the group stages, while Rafa Benitez’s Magpies lost 1-0 at Brighton on Sunday to end their run of three successive Premier League victories.
And both sets of supporters lining up at the bar are unlikely to be overly thrilled by a recent report from Il Secolo XIX (via CalcioMercato), which outlines some intriguing information regarding Sampdoria’s Dennis Praet, a reported target of the Premier League duo.
The 23-year-old attacker made the move to the Serie A outfit only last year following a long association with Anderlecht, and he has since gone from strength to strength with 40 appearances for the Italian side, 32 of which came in the league last term.
And with starts in all five of their Serie A clashes so far this season, it’s clear that Praet is an integral member of the squad at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, and as such he reportedly attracted the interest of both Everton and Newcastle over the summer, only for no deal to materialise with either side.
And recent comments from Sampdoria director Antonio Romei suggests that a deal won’t take place in January either, saying: ‘We will not sell any of our stars in January.
‘I think we will only make a few changes, nothing more. No big players will leave in the winter transfer window.’
These comments are sure to come as a blow to both Benitez and Koeman, who may have to seek other targets when the transfer window reopens in the New Year.
Landlord’s verdict: Everton and Newcastle United had contrasting summer transfer windows, with the Toffees spending over £100 million while the Magpies struggled to get targets through the door.
So it may be a slight surprise to see the North East giants ahead of Ronald Koeman’s men in the table, although it does appear clear that both sides will still need reinforcements in the New Year to meet their respective aims.
One man they missed out during the summer was Sampdoria’s Dennis Praet, a 23-year-old Belgium international attacker, and recent comments from the club’s director Antonio Romei suggest that they will fail in their quest to land him in January as well.
That is likely to frustrate both Koeman and Rafa Benitez, and with Sampdoria set to stand firm and hold onto one of their most important players, attentions may have to turn to other targets.
